With Halloween around the corner (scary), it's interesting to note the significance of Don and Betty's trip to Rome. After getting past the honeymoon phase, many marriages are challenged with moving to the next logical step in a seamless way. It seems that Don and Betty's relationship is firmly stuck in the mud, and the only way to ignite a spark is to essentially assume different personas (Don's already a master of this) in order to make a connection. First thing's first - go to a neutral location (Rome); second, put on costumes (Betty with a stylish Audrey Hepburnesque hairdo, and extra makeup); third, engage in elaborate forms of role-playing (Betty having no qualms about engaging in the big flirt with other men in full view of her husband; Don on the other hand, perfectly comfortable in playing the maverick American who deliberately sits at the table next to his wife before moving in for the kill and beating off the other suitors with ease). Little wonder that when they get back home and to the reality of their lives, she says "I hate this place." Hence, the end of the big charade. It kind of reminds me of that last Kubrick flick with Cruise and Kidman (Eyes Wide Shut). Very well written, but I wonder where things will go from here.

That last scene with Don left staring into space trying to figure what went wrong is dead on.

I do wonder how things will develop, it is impossible to predict! I want to see where all these dissatisfied women will put their energies...
