I'm surprised at Roger's character lately. He really seems to be genuine about his current wife. What do you think makes this one "different"? And do you imagine that she's behind this change in his character? He seems to have more integrity now.

Hi Adgal. I too have noticed the change in Roger's character. Quite a contrast to the Roger Sterling from season one. This could be caused by two things: 1)He is deeply in love with Jane. He fell out of love with Mona long ago and felt trapped. 2) He realizes that he is getting older. His age is really starting to show.

I agree. I think his previous behavior was mostly due to feeling trapped, and exacerbated by feeling old - hence trying to spice things up with the ladies. I don't know how long him and Mona were married, but as he said, he had gone to war and started his career while they were married... a lot can change. The person he is now chose to be with Jane... I imagine it's not something he would take too lightly, considering how much flak he got for doing it. Plus that older lady was being kind of a bitch to him anyway... she felt entitled to his heart even though she had stomped on it and forgotten about him for 20 years.

Roger sees something in Jane that he never saw in any of the others, even Joan. My guess is that he senses that he and Joan would not have been a good match because she was too much of an equal - Joan sees the same angles Roger does (witness how she distracted the dinner guests from Greg's shortcomings as a surgeon and contrast it with Roger's "handjobs" comment); she is every bit as worldly, knowing and smart as he is.
More importantly, each of them are in search of a "fantasy" lover - Joan, the rich, successful talented surgeon who will make sure she is cared for in the manner she believes she deserves and Roger, the young ingenue who will continue to be impressed by his status, and who will continue to make him feel young as he ages. He believes he has been given a chance for a fresh start, and, in contrast to Don, seems serious about making the most of it. Both Joan and Roger have a realistic appreciation of one other - and one another's limitations. They are too much alike in many ways, both are too used to getting their own way, and there would be constant friction between them in any kind of serious relationship as a result. Now, each of them has their fantasy. While Joan is rapidly gaining an appreciation of Greg's shortcomings, it remains to be seen what will happen with Roger and Jane. Annabelle's error is in believing that the death of her husband erased the results of the choice she made to go with him instead of Roger. In her mind, Roger was frozen in time, and, with her husband out of the way, she could easily pick up right where they left off. Her miscalculation was that the events of the 20 or so intervening years meant as little to Roger as they did to her. |

Roger surely had his problems in "The Grown Ups".
I think he's finally seeing that marrying Jane was a mistake. She's too immature to fit in with his crowd and family; like everyone's been saying, he now has two spoiled daughters. Mona seemed very classy by comparison. It appears he's finally realizing Joan was really the "One". His equal in many ways. |
