If Henry Francis is so wealthy, why is he driving a clunker? I think it's a Ford Galaxy or Fairlane. I'm no car expert, but he was admiring Betty's Lincoln. If he's so rich where's his Caddy? Or is his car a "loaner" from the campaign? I have read everyting and have never seen anyone mention his car; only about how wealthy he is. Thanks for your imput.

Hi Laney,
I'm not sure that they've ever stated Henry was wealthy. I usually only have time to watch the episodes once so I'm going by memory. He certainly acts like he's wealthy and travels in the same circles as wealthy people, but would'nt an aide to the governor HAVE to attend social events such as Roger's derby party even if was making average money ? |

I agree Henry’s car doesn’t make sense. I think it was used as a prop to give the most contrast as possible to Betty’s ‘Black Lincoln –Kennedy Deathmobile’
A few thoughts about his possible wealth. He has taken a job with Rockefeller as a second career, because he likes politics and is content to work with a modest salary. He had money, lost most of it and this is the best job he could find. Or he makes buckets of money on graft, kickbacks and bribes in the less regulated world of NY state politics. That would be my guess. |

When he's at the divorce attorney's office and the subject of alimony came up, I thought he said something like he would be able to give Betty anything she wanted and she wouldn't need anything from Don. As if taking Don's alimony would somehow sully his pure little dove...

That p.o.s. car was obviously gov't issue. Probably from the state motorpool.
Henry stated he had a law degree, but didn't work as one. He also said he moved furniture, probably while in college, so more than likely he didn't come from money or priviledge like Betty. Perhaps he sees the same things in her that Don once saw. An opportunity to marry into high(er) society, apart from his Rockefeller connection? Remember, Rocky's divorce and remarriage wasn't in high favor at this time. James idea about kickbacks makes sense. There was a graft scandal going on about this same time. I wouldn't put it past Henry, the guy "who gets things done." That might put a dent in their marraiage plans. Joan thought her doctor was going to take care of her, too. Things have a funny way of not working out sometimes. |

Funny you mention the graft thing. There was a radio newscast Don was listening to while Betty was dressing to go to Derby Day (where she met Henry Francis, btw). It was talking about a big news story about graft in the state government, something about liquor stores and bribery, I think. Wouldn't THAT be a kick, if HF turned up involved in that. Interesting timing on when they played it.

sstnt: I'm glad you brought up the radio newscast because I didn't notice it at the time.
Henry is a very intriguing person in my opinion. Unlike other maddicts, I think he is attractive. But he is also creepy. Remember when Don and Betts received that anonymous phone call? Many thought it was Suzanne but I believe it was Henry. When Betts called him about it he denied it a little too strongly. Me thinks he doth protest too much in that case. Also when his daughter asked him angrily why he was staring at "that woman" (Betty). Was she thinking of some unsavory capers in pulled before? What happened to his wife? Is he divorced or widowed? This has not been shown. Why ask a woman to marry him after such a short time? And then say he'll take care of her and her three children without any help from Don. Is he madly impulsive or just mad? |

Something about Henry sends off the "creepster" alarm in my head. The "hike" he wanted to go on with Betty at the beginning, I thought he was going to rape her down at the reservoir. For all Don's failings I think Betty made a decision that will come back to haunt her in Season 4
