I was pretty impressed to learn that John Hamm went back to teach drama in his high school, John Burroughs School in Ladue, Missouri. He did this as a kind gesture of appreciation to the school for their influence in his adolescent years in attendance.

Jon Hamm had quite a childhood...
His mother died of colon cancer when he was just 10 and when he was 20 his father died. Much worse, his mom and dad divorced when he was 2, whence he ended up living with his mother. After the passing of his mother, he went to stay with his dad, his 2 half-siblings, and grandma. Regardless of the hardships, his background shaped him to the man and icon he is today! |

The success of Jon Hamm as Don Draper has a lot to do with his background. There's a lot to reflect that Jon Hamm's understanding and illustration of Draper comes from his very own father who was a big businessman in St. Louis Missouri.
"My dad would have been 27 or 28 in 1960 so he would have been a young executive, and being a big fish in a much smaller pond, he would have had a Don Draper-type sway over things. I've looked back over a lot of photographs of my father and I've heard a lot of things…" Jon Hamm's father passed when he was just 20, but he's learnt more about his father in recent years. "There are many stories about our parents that we often just don't get when we're little... Each one of us has impressions of different people in our lives and we think: 'They always had our best interests in mind.' Too often that is not the real case - it is the exact opposite: 'They had their own best interests in mind..." |
