The main character of AMC’s “Mad Men” drinks from sterling-silver banded glassware that he keeps inside his Manhattan Avenue office. Draper, played by Jon Hamm, is creative director of the fictional Sterling Cooper ad agency in the early 1960s.
The roly-poly crystal glasses Draper sips from were designed by Dorothy Carpenter Thorpe (1904-1989), a Los Angeles-based artist. Thorpe designed other sterling-edged entertaining ware such as cocktail pitchers and cheese domes. Buying tip: Search “Dorothy Thorpe” and “Eames” (another designer whose name has become a search term for all things midcentury modern) on www.ebay.com. A set of four cocktail glasses in good condition, similar to these shown, recently went for $15. Pitchers have sold for about $40. |

I don't recall where I got the info about the glasses, but it shows SC as being located on Manhatten Ave. However the AMC site shows the location as Madison Avenue. Manhattan Avenue is the financial district, correct?

Check the thrift stores in your area. I found some glasses just like the ones on the Mad Men season 3 DVD box at local thrift stores.

@ NCMadMan: My parents have this exact set of glasses (the ones on the season 3 dvd box). Sadly, the silver is all worn from years of being tossed into the dishwasher (post 1980's. Before that, they didn't even have a dishwasher, apart from me! haha).
I used to fix my dad a scotch on the rocks in these glasses as a child, and now I associate them with the smell of Glenfiddich! |
