I went back to see what all the cards were and here's what I found. It's important to note that the "outcome" card that was on the table for most shots was swapped out for the Judgment card in that close up. The spread that was on the table showed the 8 of Rods as the outcome.
So, with that said, here's my interpretation of the reading. I put my own commentary in parentheses. Don's kingdom has recently been turned upside down. Presently, his inner light and talent are being clouded by his decision to turn his back on Betty and his family... turn his back on love. You can tell on the surface that Don is confused and in a sort of haze, but what may lie beneath all of that is the fact that Don is still learning what the meanings of "security" and "success" are. (What is his role as Don Draper, Advertising Agency Partner? It's not the poor boy he grew up as. It's not as the used car salesman. And it's not as one of Joy's troupe. Is he supposed to be like Roger? Who is he supposed to be now?) Regardless, there's some immaturity in his notion of what money can buy and what success means. As Ann said, Don is The World, encompassing all the elemental aspects of life. The meaning here is that he already has it all. He's complete on his own. (So why does he keep searching?) Others (Ann?) see the hits he's taken from the world and the toll it has on him. His greatest hope is positive change. But that's also his greatest fear (because change means peeling away at layers that might have previously been used as protection.) And the outcome is swift and focused movement forward. (This is what they switched out for Judgment, which is interpreted as resurrection or rebirth). So that's the reading. It's interesting because the reading they put on the table was actually a cohesive and insightful look at Don. Most of the time when TV does tarot they misrepresent cards and meanings, but there was actually some thought put behind the cards they laid out on the table. |

I wouldn't expect anything from Wiener and the writers but an actual in-depth and smart tarot layout for viewers to go back to and freeze-frame.

Wow Adgal,
That’s a very smart insight. Betty would have been better off lying on a couch next to you for psychoanalyst than her former shrink in season one. |
