I seem to have become obsessed with posting new topics, but what can I say?
We have a topic to discussion favorite lines, so why not a discussion to post our favorite non-speaking moments? That's the brilliance of Mad Men. Matthew Weiner is brave enough to have pauses, and entire scenes where not a word is spoken, because Mad Men's cast is actually talented. It's all in the details. My favorite moment of the most recent episode was when Harry Crane grabbed four cookies from the jar when offered while others were taking one or none. Yours? |

I like this topic!
In the most recent episode, I thought one of the best non-speaking scenes was when Allison sat at her desk, opened the Christmas card with her bonus from Don, and then began typing. Was she even typing anything? She just seemed to stare off into space with the devastating realization that she'd just been given the brush-off and there wasn't a damn thing she could do about it. |

The cash along with the "Thanks for all your hard work!" note in the card took on a different meaning the day after Don shagged her on his couch. It was almost like he had paid a hooker for services rendered. (Although...you DO pay hooker up front, so...)
Yeah, when he was talking to her over his desk and he was kept repeating, "Thanks for bring me...my keys." Well...her dreams of having landed the recently divorced executive were shot down, and you could read it all over her face. |

Thankfully the card was already sealed and in his drawer when she came in so he could demonstrate that it wasn’t a premeditated payoff – or payday for services rendered that night. The entire episode could be a cautionary tale about pre-marital sex. Poor secretary and poor Peggy – they are both getting screwed by their men or by the system depending on your outlook.
I’m sure the actress is very attractive in real like but they nailed a perfect “Miss Moneypenny” hovering over the typewriter, not quite up to Don’s standards for mistress/wife and will be passed over. |

I agree with Drapery excellent topic kengh.
The typing after Alison sat down was paralyzing. I have to say after Sally said she thinks she'll see her dad around every corner was quite moving for me ... I hope they move and that creepy "give me some of your hair" kid's mission is accomplished. The child who plays Sally is a good actress. |

Clearly, one of the best 0404 non-speaking moments (if not THE best) was when Peggy and Pete shared a glance through the glass walls of the SCDP reception area. This felt like a really big moment. My view of it is that it showcased the growing distance between new and old ways of thinking or living, which Pete and Peggy each demonstrated throughout the episode. Thoughts?
Another great silent scene was Peggy peeking over her wall into Dons office after Alison's fit. Absolutely humourous, yet deep at the same time. Truly brilliant! One more silent scene mention from me: When Don gets back to his flat after the Alison confrontation and begins typing an apology, but then wordlessly says "fuck it", tossing the paper aside. He rolls onto his sofa, defeated. It was a beautiful glimpse into his heart, however he couldn't follow through. Not quite ready yet, I guess! A very touching scene, in my opinion. Poor Don. He has it in him, but can't quite pull it off. |
