My mother (who was 25 in 1965) didn't have Betty's arrested development or cruelty factor, but she did make use of a willow switch when I misbehaved, which seemed to be often. That wasn't too unusual for those days, as my friends were often on the receiving end of something similar.
My father was more like Don, in that he didn't usually involve himself in discipline. Contrarily, when he did raise his voice to me, it made it seem all the more distressing. To a little kid, your parents are the world; and when they're angry with you, it's like all the gods on Mt. Olympus shaking the earth. They are still living, and we are on good terms, but you can bet that I did not pass along that kind of discipline to my kids, and they are very well adjusted. |
