Actually they were asked how long they had "been together", not how long they had been married.  I expect Dons answer was to the "been together question" and Betty answered the time they had been married.

How long have you been together was not a common question in the '60s.  One would more likely ask "how long have you been going together (dating), or how long have you been married.

I think you're right they were "together" for a different length of time than married
So I'm wondering about the kids and the circumstances of their birth

I Remember Don spent some time hanging around beat nicks a while back and while he was "corporate"
He seemed fairly comfortable around that lifestyle
which was one of the roots of the hippie "free love"
movement that came just a short time late

All the being said
I would not be surprised if Don and his wife were "together" in some sense before marriage

Knowing Don, as we have come to know him for his proclivity for "togetherness" I would have been surprised if they were not "together" in the real sense before their marriage.

i found the response very true to life....many married guys cannot recall their wedding dat.

How can you expect they remember the date when they so often forget they are married.
