I love how this show gives us a platform to talk about general trends and major events of the twentieth century. I'm definitely a casual student of American history and always eager to know more, especially first-hand stories.
So here's a silly question for you all: What's your favorite decade of the 20th century (not necessarily one you lived through) and why? For whatever reasons: personal, perceptions, political, artistic, philosophical, gastronomical, etc... |

1925-1939, as I love the Art Deco movement. I'm converting my den into a 30's style bar.
It was a time of peace and optimism (though not necessarily prosperity) and people were looking forward to all the improvements in the sciences and humanities. Little did they know. |

That brings to mind speak easies... but I really don't know much about that era. A 30's style den sounds great though.
I imagine it's common for young people to feel restless, like their generation needs to do something and isn't doing anything. That's how I feel. And maybe that's why I feel such a strong connection to the late 1960's to early 1970's... it might have something to do with it being my parents' generation. I grew up on the music, and somehow I feel like the cultural aftershocks of what happened then were and are still reeling around me... it's not like the sentiments and attitudes were new, it's the way American society just exploded that fascinates me. |

I liked the "look" of the thirties through the early to mid sixties. I am a child of the eighties, though. That's when I started to become a man. It was a weird decade, but I grew up loving Ronald Reagan (still do, God rest his soul). The clothes were a little embarrassing, but it was an exciting time.
Technologically it was great to see everyday life get a little easier and more interesting in that regard. |

King_Stannis,
I spent my 20's in the eighties, and truthfully, it's pretty much a blurr. I remember bad hair (check out Linda Hamilton in the orginal Terminator), bad music (glam rock), bad clothes (Miami Vice stuff), and bad drinks (wine coolers, Zima). But as I came of age in the Disco Era, I don't really have much room to critisize. |
